For years I never knew what caused the variety of health problems I dealt with since childhood. In 1997, I went lactose and beef-free with just enough relief to avoid going on a starvation protest against what food would do to my body. In 2008, I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia and suddenly had to view sugar as poison. In 2010, I went gluten, dairy and peanut-free. Finally, at the beginning of 2011, I went egg-free after determining my breathing problems only occurred after consuming egg. My entire list of positively tested food allergies is: wheat, dairy, egg, peanut, beef, soy, corn, fish/shellfish, pork and (GASP) chocolate. With varying degrees of allergy, I limit certain foods and pay attention to my body. But I am finally, FINALLY, feeling whole.
Having connections with others who live with food allergies is part of the support that keeps me feeling semi-normal. And with various "food revolutions" rising up in our fast-food, buy-it-in-a-box, just-add-water society, more and more resources, information and connections are made everyday. And the food options are only getting better in quality and selection.
In June 2011, I began writing for Examiner.com to cover all things gluten-free in Lewisville, Texas. I realize now that there are more people struggling like me who need support and information, to read an article on surviving the trip to the grocery store or a blog about someone else's journey. Which lead me to writing a blog specifically for the food-allergic who do not want to give up on good eating.
And besides, its somewhat therapeutic to ramble on about oneself.
